What’s on this week: 4th of July festivities, history scavenger hunt, pub run – Decaturish



DeKalb County, Georgia – There are plenty of events taking place this week in DeKalb County including a 4th of July parade at Avondale Estates, fireworks in Decatur and surrounding towns, a scavenger hunt and pub hosted by Fleet Feet Decatur and Mellow Mushroom Decatur. Here’s what’s happening this week:

History treasure hunt

Visit the Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams Library during its hours of operation for instructions with clues that will help readers read a story. The Treasure Hunt is a story with 14 stops and a walking quest that’s about a mile long. The hunt begins and ends at the library with the option to choose a small completion price, while supplies last. The library encourages participants to bring water, snacks and good walking shoes. The scavenger hunt will continue through the end of the month and end on July 31.

Decatur Farmers Market

The Decatur Farmer’s Market is open Wednesday, June 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Decatur, 308 Avenue Clairemont. The market has vendors with products such as fruits and vegetables, eggs, meat, dairy products, grains, hot dishes, cosmetics, gifts and more. Masks are mandatory to access the farmer’s market.

Inauguration of Town Green at Avondale Estates

The Town of Avondale Estates is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, June 30 at 4:30 p.m. at the town’s green site along Highway 278. The town’s green project includes the construction of a two-man park. acres and an interim solution that replaces commercial development. The park will be located along Route 278 / North Avondale Road between Oak Street and Lake Street. In addition to the park, the city will take care of stormwater, reconnect the road network and generate a new focal point for the city center, according to a press release from the city.

Wednesday Pub Run

Join Fleet Feet Decatur on Wednesday June 30 at 6:30 p.m. for their pub crawl with Mellow Mushroom Decatur. Runners will meet at the store, 431 W. Ponce de Leon Ave, and walk to Mellow Mushroom on the street after the race. This week, Fleet Feet offers an overview of the PRR course and some preparation tips for the race. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the event for announcements and take-off. On Wednesdays, the store offers a three and four mile loop and is open to all runners and walkers.

Tucker’s Farmer’s Market

The Tucker Farmer’s Market will be open Thursday, July 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market has more than 35 vendors, including a diverse group of farmers, bakers, growers and local producers from Tucker, Metro Atlanta and Georgia.

Fantastic fourth celebration

Stone Mountain Park will hold its fourth fantastic celebration July 1-5 at 9:30 pm The extended fireworks celebration will take place immediately following the Lasershow Spectacular. The celebration will include family attractions and shows. Reservations for the laser show are required.

Oakhurst Farmers Market

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, July 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scepter Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious pastries and more from the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Independence Day Celebration and Spectacular Fireworks Show in Tucker

The Town of Tucker launches a fireworks display on Saturday, July 3 at 6 p.m. in downtown Tucker. The fireworks show will feature live bands and the traditional interpretation of the national anthem and “God Bless America”. The event is part of Tucker’s fun summer that ends on August 3 with the National Night hosted at Midvale Elementary School.

Avondale Farmers Market

Join neighbors, visitors and vendors on Sunday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Avondale Estates Farmers Market, located in my parents’ basement parking lot at 22 N Avondale Road. Browse a colorful array of local foods and products. Items on offer include baked goods, cheeses, eggs, homemade jellies, meats and produce.

Tucker Parks and Recreation Pool Party

Join the Tucker Town Parks and Recreation Department for their annual poolside party on July 4th. The pool party will be held Sunday, July 4 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Kelly Cofer Pool, 4259 N. Park Drive. The event will feature music, free hot dogs, a watermelon tasting contest and a cannonball contest.

July 4th at Avondale Estates

A community-led July 4th parade at Avondale Estates will take place on Sunday July 4th at 10 a.m. The parade will start at the parking lot of the DeKalb School of the Arts and follow the traditional route north on Clarendon Avenue. Fireworks will close the vacation that evening at Lake Avondale as the sun sets.

Fireworks in Decatur

The town of Decatur will host its annual fireworks display on Sunday July 4 at around 9 p.m. -minute show. Streets in the fireworks fallout area will be closed.

Upcoming local government meetings

Stone Mountain City Council is holding a public hearing on the city’s mileage rate on Tuesday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Clarkston City Council meets on Tuesday, June 29 at 7 p.m. for its regular meeting via Zoom.

The Avondale Estates Town Commission will meet on Wednesday, June 30 at 6:00 pm at Town Hall, 21 N. Avondale Plaza, for a public hearing and a vote on the mileage rate.
