USA Men’s Soccer Team Qualifies for 2024 Olympics, Ends Historic Drought

The United States men’s soccer team qualified for the Olympics for the first time since 2008, ending its longest drought between Olympic appearances in more than 50 years.

The United States beat hosts Honduras 3-0 in an Olympic Games-winning match at the CONCACAF U20 Championship.

Honduras has already beaten the United States in Olympic Games winner matches for the Rio and Tokyo Games.

“It’s a tragedy”, the American coach Jason Kreis said after this last defeat. Some of America’s biggest stars, including Christian Pulisicwere eligible for the Tokyo Olympics qualifier but weren’t on last year’s qualifying list, either because they weren’t released by their clubs or because the United States was prioritizing matches senior friendlies ahead of World Cup qualifying.

American men last played at the Olympics in 2008, when an 18-year-old Freddy Adou scored the decisive goal in qualifying. They then missed three consecutive Olympics for the first time since 1960, 1964 and 1968 – a streak where the United States also failed to compete in a World Cup from 1954 to 1986.

Men’s Olympic football teams are made up of players born on or after January 1, 2001, with three exceptions.

Gio Reina and Yunus Musah are the biggest American stars who have not reached the Olympic age limit and will likely be on the World Cup roster this fall. They were, however, too old for the Olympic qualifying tournament.

The United States’ only men’s Olympic soccer medals came at the 1904 St. Louis Games, when all participants won medals while only three club teams from Canada and the United States competed.

The other CONCACAF representative at the Paris 2024 Games will be the Dominican Republic, which has never participated in an Olympic football tournament.

The Dominican Republic beat Guatemala for their spot after Guatemala upset Mexico in their previous game, ending Mexico’s streak of three consecutive places in Olympic men’s football, including gold and bronze medals in 2012 and 2021.
