Twisted Metal game in development by the Destruction AllStars team
Twisted metal was one of the original PlayStation’s biggest hits, one that hasn’t quite transferred into the modern era. But it looks like Sony will give it another go, as a recent report indicates that there is a new Twisted metal in the works which will coincide with the upcoming TV show starring Anthony Mackie.
Video Games Chronicle said report (which corroborates a tweet the leaker Tom Henderson), which comes from anonymous sources familiar with the project. The game is very early in development at Lucid Games, the developer who released AllStars Destruction on PlayStation 5 in February. The game would also be free, which would match Sony’s. initiative develop more service-oriented games.

It is said that this movement is in response to AllStars Destructionunusual development. It was supposed to launch alongside the PS5 in November 2020 as a $ 70 premium title before being suddenly delayed for around two weeks after its scheduled launch. The game was then revealed to be a PlayStation Plus title for February 2021 which sold for $ 20 to non-subscribers who picked up the game later.
The title’s reception was relatively poor, as it got an average score of 62 according to OpenCritic. Some updates remedied its shortcomings, but its inclusion of bots gave the impression that little stuck with the title.

Despite this, Sony seems to trust Lucid for his racing expertise. Lucid didn’t just develop games like Need for rapid return on investment, but it was started by former employees of Bizarre Creations, the studio behind a whole slew of automotive-related titles like Gotham Racing Project and Fall out. And while the art style is different between the two franchises, few other developers make car fighting games, let alone exclusively for PlayStation, so Lucid seems like one of the only choices for the job.
The report states that Sony wants this to coincide with the aforementioned TV show which would have a 2023 release window. And that seems to align with other rumored plans as Sony is also said to be redoing the first one The last of us Game. If Sony tries to match its gaming IP with its shows, that would make sense, given the upcoming HBO series.
Twisted metal has been dormant since 2012 when the PS3 reboot came out. It was also received lukewarm with an average score of 76 according to Metacritc. The servers were closed in January 2019.
