Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Proposes Expansion
SCOTCH PLAINS – The YMCA of Fanwood-Scotch Plains is due to appear before the township’s zoning adjustment board next month on a plan to expand its facilities on Martine Avenue.
The YMCA wants to demolish two single-family homes on neighboring lots and build two additions to its existing building, three new playgrounds, a clubhouse, a playing field and a basketball court.
The two additions would total 1,800 square feet and the three playgrounds would be 1,500 square feet, 1,520 square feet and 2,000 square feet.
The proposed clubhouse would be 3,600 square feet, the playing field would be 16,200 square feet and the basketball court would be 4,700 square feet.
The plan also provides for 16 new parking spaces, which would bring the total number of spaces on the property to 269. An exemption is needed as the township ordinance requires 982 spaces.

The site has a total area of 12.65 acres.
The YMCA must appear before the zoning board because the residential zone permits buildings operated by chartered organizations for the benefit of the public as conditional use.
The 7:30 p.m. meeting on October 7 will be held virtually. For instructions on how to attend and participate, visit the the board web page.
