LAPS PRESS RELEASE
Several students in Cody Minium’s fifth-grade class at Aspen Elementary School placed first in the state in the SIFMA Foundation stock game.
Elise Mack, Annaka Preston, Zack Ramirez, Simon Marshall, Angel Ricarte and Addisyn Southam were part of the team that defeated other elementary, middle and high school teams from all over New Mexico.
“The Stock Market Game is a national competition held in each state or region,” Minium said. “Students who participated this year won the fall semester, meaning they had the most valued portfolio at the end of the term.”
Students learn many skills such as math, personal finance, economics, teamwork, leadership, collaboration, communication, negotiation, ethics, and the fundamentals of stock market investing . Each group receives virtually $100,000 to invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds to create their investment portfolio, which tracks the actual stock market. Groups watch real world events and news and adjust their portfolios accordingly.
This year, two teams took first and second place against other teams from elementary, middle and some high schools. The students used their knowledge of the products and parent companies to invest in certain stocks that they thought would yield the most profit at the end of the game.
The National Stock Market Game Awards ceremony was held on May 18. The Aspen team is listed at 7:10 p.m. in this video: https://youtu.be/rYEvxLbmRQc
