20s-themed WT Homecoming Roaring festivities begin this weekend


CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – The reunion festivities at West Texas A&M University begin on October 2 and end on October 9.

The Roaring Twenties-themed festivities will culminate on October 9 with WT Football’s annual parade and homestand against Angelo State University.

Events kick off Saturday October 2 with Paint the Town Maroon & Paint My Ride.

From 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Vaughan Pedestrian Mall, students will tackle a variety of community and campus projects and visit businesses in Canyon to share a bit of the Buffalo spirit.

Residents are encouraged to bring their cars to the loop between Old Ed and the JBK and let the students open the car windows for Homecoming.

Some of the events include:

  • The Phoenix: This celebration of the Distinguished Alumni of WT Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 will include dinner and a program, followed by jazz and desserts. It will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 7 in the Legacy Hall of the Jack B. Kelley Student Center, with an after-party planned around Buffalo Fountain on the Charles K. and Barbara Kerr Vaughan Pedestrian Mall. Tickets cost $ 75; tables are $ 500 to $ 1,500. The winners are Jerry Don Logan, Claudia Stuart and Bruce Thompson for 2021, and Dr Sally Carmen, Scott Doores, Dr Rickey Harman and David Schaeffer for 2020.
  • Homecoming Golf Classic: The annual fundraising tournament will begin with a lunch on October 8 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. start at Palo Duro Creek Golf Course, 50 Country Club Drive in Canyon. The proceeds benefit the WT scholarships. Registrations are always accepted; the cost is $ 100 for individuals or $ 400 for teams of four.
  • Celebration of 60 years of integration: This banquet will commemorate the official integration of the WT campus, from 1960 with the arrival of black athletes and other students. Several of these original students or their surviving family members will be honored at the event, which kicks off at 6 p.m. on October 8 in Legacy Hall. Tickets cost $ 30.
  • Speakeasy: The Alumni Association and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum will be hosting a party that is sure to be the knees of the bees inside the PPHM’s ongoing Panhandle Prohibition exhibit. The festivities will run from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on October 8 at the museum, 2503 Fourth Ave. Tickets cost $ 25.
  • Gold and Diamond Buff Reunion: Alumni of the 1960, 1961, 1970 and 1971 classes will be honored from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on October 9 in the south hall on the second floor of the Old Main. Tickets cost $ 15.
  • Reunion parade: The Roaring Twenties-themed parade will begin at 1 p.m. on October 9 and follow a new route from the First United Bank Center to the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex along Russell Long Boulevard. For more information on entry, call 806-651-2651.
  • Countdown to the start of the Block Party: Tailgating activities will begin immediately after the parade along 26th Street in front of Buffalo Stadium on campus.
